​Pastoral Lands Board

 

Role and functions

The Pastoral Lands Board is a statutory authority established under Section 94 of the Land Administration Act 1997 (WA), charged with administering Western Australian pastoral leases in accordance with Part 7 of this Act.
 
Currently, 470 pastoral stations made up of 519 pastoral leases are included in this activity and cover nearly 90 million hectares or 36% of Western Australia.  Most of the State's pastoral leases occur in the Kimberley, Pilbara, Gascoyne, Murchison, Goldfields and Nullarbor regions.
 
Under Section 95 of the Act, the functions of the Pastoral Lands Board are to:
 
  • Advise the Minister on policy relating to the pastoral industry and the administration of pastoral leases
  • Administer pastoral leases in accordance with Part 7 of the Land Administration Act 1997 (WA)
  • Ensure pastoral leases are managed on an ecologically sustainable basis
  • Develop policies to prevent the degradation of rangelands
  • Develop policies to rehabilitate degraded or eroded rangelands and to restore their pastoral potential
  • Consider applications for the subdivision of pastoral land and make recommendations to the Minister in relation to them
  • Establish and evaluate a system of pastoral land monitoring sites
  • Monitor the numbers and the effect of stock and feral animals on pastoral land
  • Conduct or commission research into any matters that it considers are relevant to the pastoral industry
  • Provide any other assistance or advice that the Minister may require in relation to the administration of Part 7 of the Act
  • Exercise or perform such other functions as may be given under the Act or any other Act.
 

Key focus areas

At its February 2010 Strategic Discussion Meeting, the Board determined its key focus areas will be the following (listed for actioning in order of importance):
 
  • Pastoral Lease Tenure Reform – creating flexibility and security
  • Diversification Permits – actioning review recommendations
  • Rangeland Condition Monitoring – implementation of new system
  • Rangeland Land Use Planning – pastoral industry planning
  • Policy and Guidelines – review and update existing policies
  • Board’s External Communications – information extension to lessees.
The Board, on occasion, will invite organisations or individuals to present their views or expertise on some of these key focus areas identified above to assist the Board in its consideration of how to action and recommend change, in partnership with the Minister for Lands.

The Pastoral Lands Board is a statutory based, representative Board enacted through the Land Administration Act 1997 (WA). The Board has various powers and functions under Part 7 of this Act.
